If you love having fun in the sun, then the Algarve is the place for you!
As you would expect from one of the sunniest locations in Europe, watersports are a HUGE part of the Algarve.
The choice of watersports in the Algarve are staggering to say the least. Sailing, cruising, kayaking, canoeing, snorkeling, waterskiing/wakeboarding, surfing… If you can name it, the Algarve is almost certain to offer it.
Watersports in the Algarve thrive in large part because of the amount of sun that this region is exposed to. Every year, the Algarve experiences an average of 300 days of sun! In addition to the warm sun, the waters in Algarve seldom reach temperatures below 15° Celsius (59° Fahrenheit) in the winter!
Surfing is one of the largest watersports in the Algarve on the south shore. Consistent southern Atlantic swells coupled with some great beach, point and reef breaks makes this a great location for surfers looking to score some great waves.
One of newer watersports in the Algarve during the summer is kitesurfing. Steady thermal winds begin blowing during the summer months. Large, shallow lagoons on the south shore makes this a great spot for both learning and freestyle kitesurfers.
Kayaking is also one of the more popular watersports in the Algarve for families. A kayak trip around the Ria Formosa nature reserve is a great way to spend a memorably day with your family or significant other.
The many marinas around the island offer motor boats and yachts for hire. Renting out a motor boat or an easy-going sailboat ride is another great way to create some long lasting memories with your family.
If you are a water person, you’ll love the Algarve. These were just a few of the watersports in the Algarve, but again, if you can imagine it, the Algarve is almost certain to offer it!
Don’t forget to pack the sunscreen!
